Benefits on Zimbabwe

Did any of Robert Mugabe's policies or actions benefit Zimbabwe?

Robert Mugabe is known as one of the last politicians of the African continent, that is moulded in the politics of nationalism and armed resistance to colonialism. An example of one of his policies is his attempt to fix the famous land issue.

As mentioned in the previous pages, through a series of racial colonialism, Zimbabwe at independence inherited a lot of land ownership. However, the white settler population of around 4,000 people owned more than half of the cultivable land of Zimbabwe, while the other half was owned by the remaining 10 million black Zimbabweans. This is prove of the racial inequality happening in Zimbabwe. To solve this problem, Mugabe promised to fund for land redistribution. However, he just ended up taking the white-owned land and gave it to the black population to win their large amount of votes against the Movement for Democratic Change, or MDC, which was a party that is a huge threat to his power. 

This choice caused economic melt down, and caused Zimbabwe's economy to spin out of control (more information on previous page). Despite his actions that worsened the Zimbabwean economy, he created a somewhat more equalised and less racially divided community. Though he was clearly in favour for the black population, Zimbabwe is now more equal and racism is less present in the society. 

Another surprising benefit of Robert Mugabe's actions to Zimbabwe is his impact on the nation's youth. Somehow, Robert Mugabe’s fighting attitude inspired the nation’s youth (which is known as motive force in north Africa and around the world, proven by history). They are finding favor with Mugabe’s fiery rhetoric, already founded in the land reform programme whose benefits are starting to show. Mugabe, though very much despised in the west, may have infected a successor generation in ways African politics and politicians that the country might benefit from. These young generations have the ability to see the flaws and the benefits of Robert Mugabe having the possibility to improve Zimbabwe in the future.
